How can I View/Modify/Cancel a Booking?

To view and cancel your booking, click on "My Booking" tab at the top of the page. Enter your booking number and email address to display your booking details. When reviewing your booking, you will have the option to cancel it at the bottom of the page. No fee applies for cancellation.
If you need to modify your booking, you have two options:

  • Cancel and create a new booking: everything can be done through BestCarRental. Follow the steps above to cancel your reservation. Search vehicles with your new trip details and book the vehicle you want.
  • Update your existing booking: to do so, you need to contact directly the car rental company.

How much will I pay for my car rental?

The total charge shown in your confirmed reservation will be the amount that you have to pay if you do not change your original reservation or select optional extras such as Optional Insurance, GPS, Baby Seats, etc.

What is the standard excess on the vehicle if I have an accident?

Standard insurance coverage is included in all rates. The renter is liable for damage to the vehicle and third party property and therefore will be charged the full cost of excess if such an event takes place. Excess can be reduced at an additional cost at the time of rental. Please note, admin fees and charges will be applied to Optional Insurance product.

Avis car rental rates include loss damage waiver (LDW) which reduces the financial responsibility to $2,915 for cars ($5,500 for 4WDs) for loss or damage to the Avis car as long as they comply with the terms of the Avis rental agreement. Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.
When you rent a vehicle from Hertz, you are responsible for returning that vehicle to Hertz in the same condition it was in at the start of the rental, with the exception of fair wear and tear. If you return the vehicle in a damaged state, you will be liable for the cost of repair of the damage (plus the cost of repairing damage to any other vehicle or property with which the rental vehicle collided) up to the amount of the Accident Damages Excess (ADE), which is a maximum of $3,300.00 for standard cars, $5,500.00 for Prestige or Fun vehicles (inclusive of GST).
If it later transpires that the actual cost of repairs are less than the ADE, Hertz car rental will promptly credit the difference to your card. Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.
When you rent a Budget car, you are financially responsible for any loss or damage to the vehicle or any loss or damage to third party property as a result of using the vehicle up to $2,750 for cars ($5,500 for 4WDs). Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.
Third Party Liability cover for Bodily Injury is provided in accordance with the legal requirements of the country of rental. This cover is automatically included in the rental at no extra cost. In the event of an accident, loss or damage to the vehicle or third party property, a Damage Liability Fee (DLF) will be charged: $3,850 for cars and $5,500 for Audi A6, A4 Cabriolet, Audi TT Roadster, 4WDs and Commuter Bus, regardless of who is at fault or the amount of damage. If the loss or damage is ultimately less then the DLF, part of the DLF will be refunded. Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.
Thrifty car rental rates include Standard Cover for the Thrifty vehicle and 3rd party property notification. In the event of damage a $3,300 for passenger vehicles and for commercial vehicles Damage Recovery fee will apply. The Single Vehicle Accident Recovery Fee is nil for passenger vehicles within metro locations (otherwise $2,200), but for commercial vehicles a fee still applies, regardless of location. Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.
Redspot car rental rates come with a $3300 liability on all class vehicles. It includes RRF, PLF and GST. Excess can be reduced at an additional fee upon arrival.

Am I required to bring the car back with a full tank of fuel?

You have three options:

  1. FILL UP BEFORE RETURNING: Return the vehicle full of fuel and you will not be charged any refuelling fees. This is by far, the cheapest option when you rent a car from Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Thrifty or Redspot.
  2. FUEL PURCHASE OPTION: Selected locations allow you to pre-purchase the tank of fuel at a discounted/competitive price, at the time of rental. You may return the vehicle with as little fuel as you feel comfortable with. This option eliminates the need to refill the tank before returning the vehicle. There is no refund for unused fuel, therefore the less fuel in the tank at return the more money you save.
  3. REFUELING SERVICE: A refuelling service is offered for your convenience when you chose to return the vehicle with less than a full tank of fuel. Car rental companies will refill the vehicle for you and the refuelling service charge will be added to the cost of the rental. This option is available at selected locations and fuel charges may vary by location. Usually, this is the most expensive refuelling option.

How can I add optional extras to my reservation?

GPS Navigation units, Baby seats, capsules and booster seats are available from Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Thrifty and Redspot.

Requests for GPS and Baby Seats can be included in your reservation. You can purchase optional insurance at the counter when you're picking up your car.

Is there a surcharge for additional drivers?

There are no surcharges for additional drivers who meet Avis' minimum age and licence requirements.
The renter's immediate family who reside with him/her, the renter's employer, employees, fellow employees or partners. These people are classified as "Authorised Drivers" and are not required to sign an "Additional Driver" form (provided they have a valid driver's licence).
Other persons wishing to drive a rental car must present their licence at any Hertz office, in the presence of the renter any time during the rental. They must sign an "Additional Driver" form to be attached to the Rental Agreement. Additional driver charge is $5.50 per day, capped at 5 Days - $27.50.
If the authorised additional driver is 21-24 years old, an under-aged driver's surcharge applies.
Any additional driver will need to show their Drivers Licence at the time of rental. Every additional driver is charged an additional driver fee of $5.50 per day. This is capped at 5 days ($27.50) per additional driver.
There are no surcharges for additional drivers who meet Budget's minimum age and licence requirements.
No surcharges apply to additional drivers aged 25+ years and more. All drivers must be present at the rental counter at the time of collection a rental vehicle.
Redspot allows additional drivers to be placed onto the rental agreement at an agreed surcharge. Additional driver charge is $5.50 per day.

How do I pay for car rental?

Methods of payment

Avis car rental accepts many major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Note that the acceptance of Debit Cards is done so provided that the card displays the Visa or Mastercard logo, has been issued by a bank and has the customer's name and card number on the card. Debit 'Gift' cards and EFTPOS cards are not acceptable for rental.
Acceptable credit cards include: American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Diners Club and Avis.
At the time of rental, an authorisation is obtained on your credit card based on the estimated car hire charges. You must have enough credit on your card to cover all charges.
Acceptable Credit Cards: American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, Visa, Hertz, Japanese Credit Bureau (JCB).
Visa/Mastercard debit cards are an accepted form of payment. Debit/EFT cards are not acceptable.
Credit Card holder MUST be present at time of collection.
A credit card surcharge of 1.5% will apply to qualifying rentals.
Europcar accepts all major Credit Cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Card across their Australian car hire network.
Debit cards can only be accepted on passenger vehicles, with the exception for the minivan (PVAR and IVAR) categories. Europcar states that if payment is by Debit card or Cash the renter must also reduce their loss damage waiver.
Credit Card holder MUST be present at time of collection.
A 1.65% credit card fee is charged on all transactions made via credit card.
Personal and travellers' cheques are never acceptable.
Budget car rental accepts many major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Note that the acceptance of Debit Cards is done so provided that the card displays the Visa or Mastercard logo, has been issued by a bank and has the customer's name and card number on the card. Cash payment is an accepted payment type, however a security bond will be required.
Redspot car rental accepts many major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental.
Rental charges are payable when you collect the car. If using a credit card for payment, Redspot charge the rental and pre-authorise it for the bond. Please ensure your card has at least $500 funds available in addition to the rental cost. (Note that Redspot doesn�t deduct this amount from your card.) Your credit card must be valid and have raised lettering so that Redspot can imprint it.
Credit Card holder MUST be present at time of collection.
A 4.95% credit card fee is charged on all transactions made via American Express and Diners Club.

How can I pay for using toll roads?

All Avis rental vehicles are registered on the RTA's e-toll system to enable their use on any toll roads in Australia. Currently, these toll roads are on the eastern seaboard of Australia (including the toll roads in the metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane).
The applicable toll(s) incurred by your use of the vehicle on a toll road during the rental (which varies from toll road to toll road) and a service fee of, currently, $2.20 (if paying other than by cash) or $5.00 (if paying by cash) for each calendar day on which the vehicle incurs a toll (part of which service fee is paid by the RTA to Avis or a Avis licensee (as applicable).
Hertz Australia has introduced a toll pre-payment option, enabling customers renting in the State of Victoria and New South Wales to combine toll road fees with daily car rental charges in one convenient transaction.
Once you travel on a toll road, a Rental e-Pass will be activated, and a one-off start up fee of $2.75 per rental agreement will be applied, after which tolls and a video matching fee of 75 cents will be charged at each toll gate or tolling point.
If there is no travel on a toll road, you will not be charged a fee.
Once accepted, this rental e-Pass is valid for the term of your rental agreement.
In Melbourne, there are many major road systems that have automatic tolls. The general public has an ETag fitted to their vehicle that registers every toll charge. The customer in turn pays this fee direct to CityLink. Without an ETag there are heavy fines and penalties.
When a Europcar vehicle travels on these roads, a charge is billed to the vehicle registration.
Europcar offer clients the option of purchasing a toll pass at the rental agreement stage. These charges are on a per calendar day basis. This means that if the customer purchases a toll pass for a 24 hours rental period (one day hire), then the cost to purchase a passenger vehicle toll pass would be $27.18, plus state and government taxes. Pay direct to supplier per use is usually cheaper. Per calendar day fees are $$13.59 for a passenger vehicle ($24.80 for commercial vehicle).
Budget rental vehicles are now registered on the RTA's e-toll system so that tolls incurred by you when using a Budget vehicle on any Australian toll road can be recorded and billed to you by the RTA in an efficient manner. Currently, these toll roads are on the eastern seaboard of Australia (including the toll roads in the metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane).
The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority Service Fee payable by you for each calendar day that you use a toll road is $2.20 (if paying other than by cash) or $5.00 (if paying by cash) in addition to the toll charges.
In some states, there are cashless roads where there is no option to pay cash in a traditional tollbooth. The license plate of vehicles without a registered toll pass is captured by camera and the rental company is billed for the toll. As per the terms of the rental contract, these toll charges, plus an administrative fee per event, is billed to the credit card on file.
Thrifty offers the Pass24 service option: an electronic prepaid toll pass purchased at the rental counter. It offers worry-free, convenient 24-hour unlimited access to tollways, including express lanes and those converting to a cashless operation.
Only the Pass24 toll service, when accepted at the counter, will allow for the prepayment of tolls where available. Otherwise, it is the responsibility of the renter to pay for toll and citation events during the rental; when the rental company, as vehicle owner, is notified of an unpaid event, the amount of the charge, plus penalties and administrative costs are applied to the card on record.
All Redspot locations that have nearby toll roads have all its vehicles fitted with an electronic toll road passes. Once activated, it will give you unlimited access to all electronic toll roads across Australia. Please note: If you drive through a toll road without activating the built-in toll pass from Redspot, a processing fee of $15.00 per toll plus the cost of the toll road will be charged to your nominated account.
