Great Day Trips To Do From Melbourne
Melbourne is one of the best cities in the world, with great restaurants, clubs, live music, art, sport and culture, and is also within a stone’s throw of a lot of incredible places. If you are visiting Melbourne, be sure to check out some of the spectacular highlights just outside the city, the following day trips are all really special places in their own right.
Bell’s Beach
Less than 45 minutes from downtown Melbourne is one of the world’s best beaches; Bell’s beach. If you don’t have a vehicle, car hire in Melbourne is quite affordable, so make sure you make it to Bell’s, you really don’t want to miss this amazing Australian surf spot.
Wilson’s Promontory
If you are an outdoorsy type and need a fix in the form of some great hiking, don’t worry; Wilson’s Prom has you well and truly covered. Around two hours east of Melbourne is one of Victoria’s best wilderness areas where you can spend the day hiking and checking out some incredible wildlife. If you don’t have your own transport, there are some great tours that explore the area around the Prom, though compare car hire prices to the cost of the tour, as sometimes you are better off just renting your own car.
Phillip Island
One of the best places in the world to see penguins is just outside Melbourne on Phillip Island. Depending on the time of year you can also see seals, manta rays and even whales, so if you love animals this day trip is well worthwhile. If you are more of a motor sport lover than an animal lover, Phillip Island is also a great place for you with this being the site of great motorbike and car racing several times a year.
Geelong
If you have done a pretty good job checking out Melbourne and want to see another great urban centre nearby, you should definitely check out Geelong. A city in its own right, this vibrant little centre is a charming place with great restaurants, clubs, pubs and of course is the home of the champion AFL team the Cats. If you happen to be here during the AFL season and want a real treat, go to a Cats home game and see some of Australia’s most entertaining fans.
The Great Ocean Road
If you only have one day to explore but want to make it count, get yourself up early in the morning and hit the Great Ocean Road. You really should take a few days to see it though if you are short on time it is still worth your while to have a quick look at it. The section of the road closest to Melbourne is probably the most spectacular part, though you should still be able to make it all the way to the iconic Twelve Apostles and back.
If you find yourself in Melbourne you are sure to have an amazing time, though don’t miss out on all the highlights just outside the city. There is nothing worse than being so close to some incredible highlight but not making the effort to see them while you have the chance. See the area properly and do some day trips!
